Weak subgrades require integrated performance

Roadway performance starts at the foundation. When subgrade soils are weak, soft, expansive, or moisture-sensitive, they can compromise constructability, reduce load support, and accelerate long-term distress. Without effective stabilization, these conditions can lead to rutting, deformation, aggregate contamination, and increased maintenance over the life of the roadway.

Integrated performance is incredibly valuable in heavy-duty applications such as haul roads, railroads, working platforms, and industrial storage areas. In these environments, weak soil and high wheel loads can quickly compromise constructability and long-term durability. The top priority when combatting these issues is to create a stable platform that improves load distribution, maintains separation between aggregate and subgrade, and helps manage moisture with the structural section.

Traditional stabilization approaches often force a tradeoff between reinforcement, separation, filtration, and water flow. Some materials, like geogrids, provide tensile strength but lack separation/filtration. Other materials, like slit films, provide separation, but lack the confinement and permeability needed to improve structural support. Engineers need a geosynthetic solution that can integrate all these functions for superior roadway performance.

MIRAFI RSi-Series is a high-performance woven geotextile engineered to combine the key functions needed for roadway reinforcement and stabilization: high modulus, separation, confinement, filtration, high water flow, easy on-site identification and wicking. 

Its patented double-layer weave pattern combined with wicking fibers delivers high reinforcement strength with enhanced hydraulic performance, helping create a more stable working platform and a more durable roadway structure. The unique construction uses monofilament, high-modulus fibrillated, and wicking yarns in a corrugated double-layer weave pattern that increases surface area, improves soil interaction, resists clogging, while offering extremely high modulus tensile strength. MIRAFI RSi-Series is engineered with moisture wicking fibers to provide passive moisture management. The wicking yarns within MIRAFI RSi provide enhanced lateral drainage by moving moisture through their micro-channels across the entire width of the fabric roll. The passive moisture management draws moisture out of pockets of soil with higher moisture content and then balances that moisture content across the width of the geotextile with areas having lower moisture content. This structure helps provide stronger lateral restraint of the aggregate layer at low strain levels and passively wicks moisture, improving confinement and supporting long-term roadway performance. 

The same double-layer construction also creates a more complex flow path through the geotextile, which supports long-term water flow, reduces the risk of blinding and clogging, and helps prevent piping by retaining finer soil particles. The result is a stabilization solution that supports both long-term structural performance and hydraulic efficiency.

MIRAFI RSi-Series is well suited for paved and unpaved roads, working platforms, railways, roads, access roads, parking areas and other transportation or site development applications where improved confinement, load distribution and constructability are essential.
